A froth of white in the woodland

 

In my last (and rather longer) post, 'A bug's eye view of cow parsley', I said that an individual plant of it isn't the prettiest plant ever (or words to that effect).  Here, though, the view along the path this morning was amazing.  It made the walk to the shops really pleasurable!

Stitchwort and bluebells

The weather in the UK has been foul recently, with far more rain than is decent.  On the other hand, the current Spring flowers are spectacular this year, both in quantity and in distribution.   I walked around the edge of a woodland in rural Cambridgeshire last week, and in a clearing as you enter there was this breathtaking swathe of stitchwort and bluebells.  A little further on, there were a few early purple orchids as well.  Until lockdown, I had never walked this particular route; it is one of my favourites now.   It seems fitting to start a new wildflower blog in the Springtime, when the flora are at their peak; There will be photos from a suburban fringe, from open agricultural land, from the woodland understorey as here, and possibly from the new wildflower patch in our garden. For anyone who is interested, I take most of my photos with a phone camera (Samsung A23) rather than with a dedicated camera and they do tend to be opportunistic rather than planned. A pinch of wild garlic

This is one of my very favourite spring flowers. Wild garlic, aka ramsons, grows in damp woodland areas; there seems to be a lot more of it than usual this year, and there has been a heck of a lot of rain. I'm not going to say that this is cause and effect, but... Like many plants, it has a plethora of common names - it is often called bears' garlic. The Latin name of the plant ( Allium ursinum ) bears witness to that. This is a truly aromatic plant; the leaves and flowers are edible, and make very tasty pesto.  I can vouch for the fact that it only takes a couple of the flowers to flavour a stir fry.

A bug's eye view of cow parsley

  At this time of year, the woodland edges – and many verges – around here in Cambridgeshire are billowing with frothy cow parsley.   You can’t miss it; it’s all green stems and leaves and umbels of tiny white flowers. It is an important springtime plant but unless the Sun catches it at just the right angle it’s not, taken individually, an attractive plant in comparison to some!   It’s an untidy-looking thing that only its mother could love. It is a member of the carrot family and is edible if rather ‘meh’; I've not tried it but apparently it tastes like a cross between parsley and something a little bit like aniseed.   It’s sometimes known as wild chervil.   Be warned, though – it looks very similar to other plants including hemlock (although hemlock blooms later, in the summer, than cow parsley.   In the UK, cow parsley is sometimes called ‘mummy die,’ a dire threat to dissuade children from eating it, so as to prevent them eating hemlock by mistake.   Socrates’ ghost would tell
